This is not the greatest Final Fantasy fansite in the world. This is just a tribute. To Total FF, an online community from the early 2000s for fans of Square Enix's venerable series of role playing games, recreated with original site assets and nostalgia.
We hung out on IRC, added each other on ICQ and MSN, and chatted about games and anime and music and our lives, and swore we'd someday get round to filling the website with actual content related to the games that had drawn us together. We didn't, of course. TFF was always about the forum and chatroom.
I look back on TFF with fondness. It's where I met my wife, so it'll always be dear to my heart. On the internet before social media it was also the first time I connected with people beyond my real life social circle in a way that feels completely unremarkable in the always-online present. It was a novel and exciting way to meet people across the world who shared a love of Final Fantasy games before being online was everyone's default.
I sometimes wonder about the people behind the screen names. What're you all up to now? It's been over 20 years since the site went offline. It'd be fun to hear from anyone who remembers it as fondly as I do - drop me a line at totalff.unify720@passmail.net if that's you. I hope you're all well.
Here's to Total FF!
